With the holidays fast approaching, it’s all too easy to get caught up in hustle and bustle and send your stress level through the roof, and your health plummeting. Make this year different with the following 5 healthy tips for a less stressful holiday.

Give Gifts that Mean More and Cost Less. Trying to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list can add unnecessary pressure. Try to remember the reason for the season and make your gift reflect that original simplicity. Giving something hand-made if you’re the crafty type, or a bound book of photographs from shared experiences during the year are great ideas.

A calendar with pictures of happy times for each month of the new year, or home-made goodies from your kitchen (giving you an opportunity to share the gift giving process with others in the family) are all ideas that will save you money and time. These types of personalized gift probably will mean more to the recipient than something off the shelf in a store.

Set Reasonable Goals. Be careful not to over extend yourself. Choose only those activities that you look forward to and decline invitations for the rest. It’s easier to do than you think. This year rather than committing to volunteering for 10 activities over a 3 week period choose several that are most important to you, do them well, and you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the difference that you’re making by volunteering.

Do something nice for you each day. Make an appointment for yourself on your calendar and keep it. It can be as simple as reading a book with a cup of tea for 30 minutes, or taking a walk with your dog, or chatting with a friend on the phone, or scrap booking. This keeps gives you permission to take time to rejuvenate and energize daily which will keep your stress levels low and your enthusiasm high.

Stay Healthy. Stress weakens the immune system. And a weakened immune system means that your body is less able to fight off germs and viruses that can develop into colds, flu, and respiratory congestion that exacerbate other chronic conditions such as allergy and asthma. Continue to eat well, stay hydrated, keep exercising and most importantly make sure you are well rested.

Healthy Habit Maintenance Tip #1: Use A Smaller Plate
Sometimes it is not what is on a persons plate that makes them gain weight, but rather the big portion they give themselves. One tradition you can do without is stuffing yourself until your belt buckle bursts. Portion control is key to losing weight no matter what time of year you make healthy eating goals.

Instead of giving up your favorite holiday foods, simply use a smaller plate and eat less. Many times when you attend a party, the food is different from what you normally eat and you will be tempted to sample everything new that you see. Going to a holiday party empty stomach is like letting a child loose in a candy store.

Drink a healthy protein shake before you go, or a nice big glass of ice water. There is no harm at trying new things, but making sure your tank is half full before you go will allow you to make decisions based on your stomach and not on your eyes. You will probably still want to sample that 5 cheese and salsa dip, but you won’t want to eat half the bowl.

Healthy Habit Maintenance Tip #4: Keep Yourself Active
One of the key components to good health is exercise. We all know it and it is more important over the holidays than any other time of year. Most people promise to join a gym after the holidays, but the problem with that is how they live during the holidays. They eat more than usual and when judgement day comes, they have their work cut out for them.

You can find ways of moving around more without going to the gym before New Years Resolution time comes around. Offer to do the dishes after Thanksgiving instead of plopping yourself down on a recliner in front of the TV. Grab a long lost relative during a party and walk around the block. The more you move around, the more calories you will burn.

Healthy Habit Maintenance Tip #5: Forgive yourself
If you do surrender to temptation, forgive yourself and get back on track the next day. One overindulgent evening will not destroy all the previous days that you maintained your healthy habits. Holidays are usually more about one day though, so make sure that you do not make a habit of spending every evening at a different party filling up on junk food.

The key to losing weight and maintaining an ideal weight is leading a healthy lifestyle. This means you are making healthy choices about what you eat and you are keeping yourself active with daily exercise. It also means that you should not give up the things you love just because you are afraid to gain a pound. Tomorrow is always a new day, but the choices you make the night before can dictate how your new day will go for you.

Lose Weight During The Holidays? How To Get Double Credit For Every Lost Pound!

If you’ve been struggling with your excess fat, the prospect of the upcoming holidays may well fill you with dread.

You barely fit in your clothes as is. If things go the way they usually go during the holidays, you may have to join the post-holiday shopping crowds out of necessity! You won’t have a thing to wear – because nothing will fit anymore.

I don’t know about you, but that prospect always makes me cringe. I’ve been there, and I’d rather not repeat it.

Which is why I have occasionally approached the holiday season in a rather contrarian spirit when it comes to my intake of food. And I’m planning to do it again this year.

How’s that? Easy.

There are two major weight loss facts that work in my favor here:

Every pound I lose between Thanksgiving and early January counts twice!

It’s a matter of simple math!

As you know, those of us already struggling with extra weight can easily add 10 pounds or more during a few weeks of reckless ingestion of cookies and eggnog. I’ve done it before, and I don’t care to repeat that particular feat.

Now imagine this: Instead of adding 10 pounds, how would you feel if you were to lose 10 pounds instead. Or even “just” 5 pounds. You’d be way ahead of the game, wouldn’t you.

Sure, it’ll be a bit of a hassle. Maybe even a big hassle. But just for a few weeks. Meanwhile, if you keep the pay-off in mind, it will feel so worth it.

But it wouldn’t be half as good an idea if it weren’t for fat loss secret number two:

Most people’s bodies seem to respond very nicely to alternating high and low calorie intake days.

There are several diets that feature this technique, including renegade versions of traditional ones. Just check out the Wendie Plan, Wendie’s version of Weight Watchers, where she distributes the 35 extra “points” over just 3 to 4 of the 7 days, thereby creating quite some ups and downs.

The weight though will just go down, down, and down some more because that kind of “weight cycling” prevents our bodies from turning into metabolic slugs.

Imagine the potential of this little trick. You could work its magic by simply planning some diet days alternating with some less restrictive days – carefully scheduling the more generous allotments for the days with office parties, family Christmas celebrations, and so on.

That’s exactly what I’m going to do.

Yes, I know! It’s going to be hard with all the seasonal goodies around.

So let’s review the benefits:

If you DO lose weight NOW, it will count DOUBLE!

Instead of gaining 10 pounds, you could LOSE 10 pounds!

Net loss: 20 pounds, maybe even more!

Wouldn’t THAT be worth a little awkwardness around the punch bowl? Imagine being that much slimmer come New Year’s Eve! Imagine the dress you’d be able to wear — the one that hasn’t fit you in ages! Imagine all your friends having piled on the pounds in the meantime, wondering how the heck you managed to actually get thinner!

Go ahead. You deserve to look and feel great! Make that new and improved body your own personal Christmas present.
