Weight Loss Foods – What You Should Eat For Breakfast

It has been said in the past and still holds true, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. The key to successful weight loss start with eating something for breakfast, and yes even if you’re not hungry.

Our metabolism “wakes up” in the mornings and it needs fuel to burn in order to start working and to provide you with plenty of energy for your body and mind during the course of the day – without this fuel, your energy will be limited. Bad nutritional habits like rushing off to work and not eating anything till lunch time is extremely bad your your body and metabolism and also increases your urge to binge on all sorts of snacks and junk food during the day, which will obviously be detrimental to your weigh-loss goals.

Did you know that although uncommon practice, having some protein in your morning breakfast actually does your body a world of good? Protein in the mornings help your body detoxify faster and this process is important as your body will not fully metabolize stored fats until this initial cleansing has been done. Try having some solid protein for tomorrow’s breakfast and notice the difference it makes to your level of energy during the day. Have a piece of chicken, steak or bacon and not just an egg or two.

To lose weight fast, be mindful of your carbohydrate intake during breakfast as well as the rest of the day. Stay away especially from the starch-filled carbohydrates like white bread, rice, noodles and potatoes. These processed foods are not easily digestible by our bodies, don’t release energy fast enough, and as a result get stored as fat a lot quicker. Instead, go for natural organic foods if you can such as vegetables or mushrooms for your breakfast.

Certain foods that contain “good” fat can also be added into your breakfast menu to help increase metabolism. These good fats can be found in raw nuts, seeds and avocados, as well as extra virgin olive oil and coconut oils. They contain good amounts of omega 3 and also help our bodies burn stored fat. Consider using coconut and olive oil when cooking your breakfast and throw in some avocados into your salad, and you’ll be helping your body fire up your metabolism to full throttle.

Some people find that they just aren’t hungry at the start of the day and if this is the case with you, you will need to re-adjust your digestive system. It is not natural for us not to feel hungry in the mornings but it can occur with people who have poor nutrition, don’t get enough exercise or don’t sleep enough. Other things to avoid are having coffee or alcohol too late at night. This in total results in a lack of energy during the day and a very slow metabolism which could also result in weight gain.

By pushing yourself out of the comfort zone and changing some bad habits, followed by the suggestions provided in this article, you should definitely feel a more energetic and healthy start to your mornings, not to mention a weight-loss to follow!

Foods To Eat When Pregnant: What Is The Best Pregnancy Food?

The importance of knowing the best foods to eat when pregnant cannot be over-emphasised. Your unborn child is wholly dependent upon you its mother to provide all the essential nutrients that it requires to grow and develop fully. Eating the right food ensures normal fetal growth and development and minimises pregnancy problems such as heart burn, constipation and swollen feet. Eating the proper food also ensures that the mother has adequate energy to carry out her daily activities as her pregnancy progresses.

The best foods to eat when pregnant are wholesome natural foods free of additives, preservatives, processed sugars and fats, all which can be detrimental to the baby’s development. These wholesome natural foods, eaten in a proper balanced way, will provide all the essential vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and fatty acids that the unborn child will require throughout the nine months to develop fully.

Proteins are known as the building blocks of life, and for good reason. Your body needs protein to get amino acids which are essential for cell development of all the major organs and tissues. Recommended daily requirements are approximately 50 milligrams, and can be sourced from chicken, beef, pork, fish, beans and nuts, as well as dairy products such as cheese and milk.

Calcium is essential for the healthy development of teeth and bones and helps the mother in relation to control of her blood pressure and leg cramps. Calcium can be sourced from dark green leafy vegetables and soaked grains, as well as yogurt, milk, cheddar cheese and calcium-fortified foods like soy milk and cereals. Most women need approximately 1000 milligrams a day.

Iron is necessary for the production of haemoglobin. Basically your body will need to produce more blood as your fetus develops, of which haemoglobin is an essential element. Lack of iron can cause anaemia in both mother and child and can lead to low birth weight and premature delivery. It should also be remembered that iron levels can take a period of time to build up in the body, so if you’re planning on getting pregnant, start working on your iron intake immediately. Recommended foods to eat when pregnant that contain iron include beef, pork, dried beans, spinach, wheat germ and oatmeal or grains fortified with iron. Recommended daily requirements are approximately 20 milligrams.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that aids tissue repair and healing, promotes healthy teeth and bones and also helps in the development of a healthy immune system. Recommended daily requirements are approximately 80 milligrams and can be sourced from citrus fruits, broccoli, strawberries, tomatoes and green beans.

Fluids are an essential requirement that is often forgotten about. The best fluids are fruit and vegetable juices, soups, filtered water, caffeine-free and sugar-free drinks. Staying hydrated has numerous benefits including avoidance of early labour, healthier skin and decreased possibilities of constipation, haemorroids and bladder infection.

How to Achieve Healthy Weight Loss With the Benefits of Soy

We all know how important protein is to any diet, whether you are trying to achieve a healthy weight loss or not. Certain fad diets tell people its OK to go out and eat as much greasy bacon as you want, as long as you stay away from those killer carbohydrates. As you probably have already figured out, this type of diet does not work. The main reason is that the source of protein comes from animal fats, and eating too much of it will take its toll on your health.

Be very thankful that we have soy in our world. It is the healthy alternative to animal protein for many many reasons. The incorporation of even just a small amount of soy protein into the diet every day is beneficial in the prevention of all kinds of diseases. What does that have to do with losing weight? Everything!

The key to healthy weight loss is proper nutrition. Once your body is healthy on a daily basis, it can perform miracles. Living a healthy lifestyle means choosing soy over bacon when you want to give your body protein fuel. When you feed your body the right way, you will get the results you want.

Soy contains more protein than milk without the saturated fat or cholesterol. Soya beans are the only beans to be considered a complete protein because they contain all eight essential amino acids. Soy protein contains high levels of a substance called Tyrosine, which helps to maintain our alertness and mental energy without the need for excess calories.

Soy is a low-glycemic index food which helps regulate blood-sugar and insulin fluctuations. This helps you to feel more satisfied and less hungry until your next meal, which is beneficial for weight management and control. Some studies even indicate that soy may stimulate the metabolism! How cool is that!

Soy also helps reduce the amount of fat that is stored in your body by converting fewer calories into fat from the food that you consume. Soy protein can also control insulin levels therefore reducing the frequency of sugar cravings. Since your body will feel more satisfied and less hungry, this will also reduce the overindulgent eating.

Soy also enhances energy levels and building muscle mass in a healthy way. Muscles burn energy during daily activities and exercise. Increased muscle mass burns more calories. Since soy increases the speed at which the fat cells burn the fat stored in the body, it once again affects your metabolism. Exercise is not mandatory for a healthy weight loss, but even the smallest workout every day can accelerate your weight loss efforts.

I had chronic asthma all of my life and could not exercise…until I began drinking soy-based protein shake meal replacements. I lost 70 pounds in 4 months and have kept it off for over 15 years now. The best part is that because of the benefits of soy, I can now exercise every day without any breathing problems. I was also able to get rid of all my prescription medications on top of it.

Do I have to drink a soy-based shake every day? No, I do not have to. If I want to go back to being overweight with breathing problems, I suppose I could stop using soy. But why would I ever want to do that? As I stated before, the key to a healthy weight loss and maintaining an ideal weight is the willingness to lead a healthy lifestyle. You can not lose weight and expect to go back to old bad eating habits without suffering the consequences.

A great advantage to living a healthy lifestyle is that you do not need to give up the foods you love. You can sill eat them, just not as often. You must replace some of those foods with healthier alternatives. The road to a healthy weight loss is littered with all kinds of snack wrappers, like soy nuts, protein bars and fruit. (OK, fruit usually doesn’t need a wrapper, but you get my point.

Since fad diets, unbalanced diets, diet pills, diet supplements, weight loss surgery and other short term weight loss methods are the cheaters way to lose weight, why bother? Cheaters never prosper and there is no substitute for proper nutrition. Take advantage of the many benefits soy can give to you and you will soon find yourself living the kind of life you deserve.

About Women?s Health and Pregnancy

There is no normal, healthy condition as stressful and dangerous as pregnancy. Many parts of a woman’s normal lifestyle can become a health risk when a woman is pregnant. Every woman should see her doctor as soon as possible when she suspects she may be pregnant and she should follow the doctor’s suggestions; maintain good nutrition and much more.

The good thing is that usually, the things a pregnant woman gives up are bad for her and the things she needs to do are good for her. Usually, women’s health and pregnancy go hand in hand.

Health Times Two

A woman who expects to become pregnant should already be living a healthy lifestyle. Smoking is possibly the worst thing for women’s health and pregnancy. Smoking increases a woman’s risk of heart disease, lung disease and can adversely affect just about every physical system in the body. Don’t wait until you are pregnant to quit. You wouldn’t invite a stranger into a smoke-filled home, don’t do it to your child. Begin your prenatal vitamin regimen as soon as possible including folic acid and iron.

And remember, the vitamins are all the “eating for two” you need to do for quite a while. Avoid toxic substances. Even paint fumes can be harmful to women’s health and pregnancy. Don’t eat undercooked meats or clean up after your cat while pregnant. Toxoplasmosis is very dangerous to an unborn baby. Increase your hand washing, too.

Weight gain is normal during pregnancy. If you are over- or underweight normally, you may need to consult a nutritionist during your pregnancy to monitor your weight gain and diet. If morning sickness is a problem, try eating six small meals instead of three large ones. Don’t let the queasy feelings make you skip too many meals.

Medication can be a problem during pregnancy. If you have a chronic disorder that requires medication, consult your doctor as soon as possible – even before becoming pregnant if possible. Sometimes women’s health and pregnancy become a tradeoff temporarily. That goes for over the counter medications, too. Check with your doctor before taking pain killers or cold medication. Cold medication can contain alcohol which is harmful to the baby. That also means cutting out alcoholic beverages while pregnant and nursing. Consult your doctor about physical activity.

Usually, the amount and type of exercise that was normal prior to pregnancy will be safe during at least most of the pregnancy. New types of exercise should be monitored by your doctor. By taking the sensible precautions, women’s health and pregnancy can get along just fine.

Fat Burning Foods ? Four Essential Choices

Did you know that eating to burn fat is considered to be an extremely powerful rapid weight loss technique? The secret is choosing the right foods and to avoid overindulging if you wish to achieve your quick weight loss goals. The old saying ‘you can have too much of a good thing’, is actually still very true. If you choose the right foods but still eat them in great quantities you will end up gaining weight instead of losing it.

The first fat burning food you should note is the controversial nut. Nuts such as almonds, walnuts, pecan and peanuts have previously come under plenty of negative scrutiny from weight loss gurus who claim them to have far too high fat content. Although nuts do have a high calorie count they do contain healthy natural fats known as monounsaturated fats. These healthy fats are excellent for supporting active brain function as well as providing fantastic energy without any negative side effects on your heart. Just be mindful of your portion sizes though. These handy little super foods are extremely nutrient dense, so just a handful once a day is adequate.

Another effective fat burning food which is considered to be one of the best is oatmeal. Simple oats have a hard time on the grocery store shelves competing with the hundreds of breakfast cereal choices available today. However, most of these expensive and fancy cereals contain nothing but high glycemic carbs which only leave you hungry again only an hour after eating them. Oats, on the other hand, are a fantastic source of water soluble fiber. Your body slowly digests the fiber throughout the morning which keeps you feeling satisfied for longer, in addition to giving you a long release of energy rather than a short spike. If oatmeal is a touch too bland for your taste buds, try adding your favorite fresh fruit, honey, yogurt or perhaps a handful of nuts. These natural and healthy additions will add a burst of flavor along with extra nutritional value.

The third fat burning food to add to your list is the humble apple. Isn’t it ironic that many of us diligently persuade our children to eat an apple every day, but ignore taking our own good advice? Apples, like oatmeal, also prolong the digestive process and prevent you from experiencing hunger pangs for long periods of time. They are crave-killing foods which are an excellent defense weapon against overeating and weight gain. What is more apples are a cheap and portable healthy food which is available all year round.

The final fat burning food you should note is actually a fat burning drink. If you have been seeking information on how to lose weight quickly then you are probably aware of the weight loss benefits of green tea. Green tea is full of powerful antioxidants and is an effective metabolism booster. By increasing your metabolic rate your body will start burning fast faster and more effectively. Just drink a cup of green tea every morning to stimulate your metabolism and help burn calories all day long, even when you’re resting.

By introducing these four super fat burning foods to your diet you will speed up your progress to successfully achieving your weight loss goals.

Low Carb Heart Healthy Cooking

Before cooking meat, select portions of meat, which have minimum fat. On the other hand, if you have chosen parts with meat, cut out those parts, which contain meat. Another substitute for meat is fish. Fish does contain fats, but it is low in saturated fats. In addition, fish oil is good for health. You can eat baked, boiled, or grilled fish.

Crawfish and shrimps contain higher levels of cholesterol than other seafood, but they have low saturated fats. In addition, instead of non-vegetarian food, you can switch to vegetarian food, to completely cut down the calories and fats. Try beans, mushrooms, salads, home made low fat salad burgers to cut down the fat. Try cooking vegetables with less oil for heart healthy meals. Cut down excessive use of salt in the food so that the sodium levels in the blood remain stable. Use more of heart healthy herbs and spices to make the food even tastier. Follow this heart healthy diet to live longer.

Here are a few more recipes for a carbohydrate addict’s heart healthy diet. Try boiled Brussels sprouts sprinkled with finely chopped onion, salt, pepper and a dash of lemon. It is not only tasty but also nutritious. If you are ordering starters in a restaurant, which constitute of breads made from white flour, go for whole wheat bread instead. White flour bread has nothing but carbohydrates, which your body does not need. Again, instead of eating white rice eat brown rice, which is healthier. Make sandwiches out of salad leaves instead of bread. Cut down on wafers, crackers and all other junk foods. If you follow this heart healthy diet, your cholesterol levels will be back to normal in no time.

Eating heart healthy foods will also help in weight loss. As you cut down on calories and saturated fats and switch over to foods to keep your heart healthy, your weight will also be balanced. For all those diabetic patients out there, here are some diabetic heart healthy recipes. You can make carrot cake with raisins, nuts, etc. which is by the way very nourishing. A heart healthy chocolate cake recipe would me a chocolate cake stuffed with pieces of carrots, apples, etc.

If you don’t want your kids to have heart problems in the future, try educating them since childhood about the importance of eating healthy foods. Some heart healthy activities for kids could be quizzes, which educate them about the right foods, the importance of exercise etc.

Men’s Health: Running the Bases

Let’s face it, men and women are different. It’s a fact. And when it comes to taking care of their bodies, men and women are very different.

Men drink more (alcohol), smoke more and see their doctors less than women do. They are less likely to wear a seat belt (22% of teen men say they rarely or never wear a seatbelt v. 15% of teen women). And they consume red meat at an alarming rate.

All that said, those facts refer to the “average” American male. There are plenty of men, who eat their vegetables, drink the requisite eight glasses of water a day, and kiss there wives and children before they go to bed precisely at 9:30p.m. every night. If you belong to this group, you are perfect, and you need not read a word more.

If you think you might belong to the first (average) group, though, read on. You might just get a peek at what the future holds for you.

The Wake Up Call – 7:00p Thursday

Whether you are a man or a woman, an average Joe or not, at some point, you need to decide to take your health seriously or you may just get an unwelcome wake up call.

Nothing pains me more than to visit my local city park on a week night in early spring. It is there where I will find many of aging brothers hitting the ball around for the first time after a long winter of sitting. It is usually Tuesday or Thursday when the over 40 recreation softball league has its games. It’s a bunch of guys from all walks of life. Some are business men taking a few hours away from the kids and the office to toss the ball around. There might be a high school baseball coach getting his playing time in. You might see the produce manager from your local grocery store and a fireman or a police officer or two.

Before the game starts, you see some stretching, some talking, and one or two having a beer. Then the game begins, and they get to work. The guys are chatting it up, laughing about nothing in particular and razzing the batter. Good clean guy fun. But inevitably at some point, one of those guys pulls something, tears something or pops something out of alignment. The game stops while they help him off the field. And once he’s on the bench (or on his way to the hospital), the game starts up again.

I always wonder what happened to that one guy. Was the injury serious? Or did he spring back in a couple of days? Did he wake up to the fact that he is 47 years old and start working out regularly and stretching before games? Or did he decide he was “suddenly” too old to play kids games anymore and quit?

Over 40 And Going it Alone

Now, if I were more of an opportunist, I would make a point of going to those first few games of spring. And I’d bring my business card and a sign up sheet for treatment. But I can’t bring myself to do it. And anyway, I would really rather get new patients BEFORE injury strikes.

Now, ask yourself, am I the guy on the bench or one of the guys still playing? Don’t know?

Well, if it’s been awhile since regular exercise and stretching were a part of your routine, you might just be the guy on the bench. You see, within the human body, there is something called “Fascia”, a pliable, protective sheath that covers every cell. To your muscles and  joints, Fascia is like the elastic in your underwear. If it is kept intact and healthy, it holds them up and holds them together, giving them strength and stability. As it ages, though, and if not cared for properly, fascia loses its elasticity, and you lose range of motion and strength. Before you know it, you can’t bend down far enough to catch a ground ball, and throwing to first base feels like a hot poker in your shoulder.

If that is you, don’t walk to my office, run (or move as fast as your tight muscles will allow). I will work with throughout a 10-session series to soften and strengthen your fascia, and ultimately to bring back movement and muscle you forgot you had. By next softball season, you will be in game shape.
