Should I Be Weighing Myself Every Day? A Christian Weight Loss Approach

Should I be weighing myself every day?  This is a common question I get asked as a weight loss coach.  I do find that many people put way too much importance on what the scale is reading and that number can influence how they act and how they feel about themselves.  For my christian clients I suggest a unique approach to weighing-in and this is what I would like to share in this article.

Christians are of course familiar with the story of Jesus fasting for 40 days and nights in the desert.  During this time the devil appear to him and tempted him to demonstrate his powers but with each temptation Jesus would revoke the devil with scripture.  Having failed, the devil departed and angels brought Jesus nourishment.

Now, I certainly am not asking clients to fast for 40 days and nights but I am asking them to not weigh themselves for 40 days and nights and during that time period stick with their dieting plan.

What I find is a transformation in the thoughts of my clients.  They no longer put their trust in the scale and instead start to trust themselves and their plan.  They no longer have the anxiety that used to surround the conflicting internal dialog that centered around the question, “should I be weighing myself every day?”  And this helps them stay true to their set course.

Weight loss does take time but it will happen when you put forth a consistent effort yet that consistent effort takes faith.  Your weight will fluctuate every day because your body is dynamic, some days it will retain more water than others because your body in its own wisdom sees a need for that extra water.

So to answer the question, “Should I be weighing myself every day?” It is up to you but I hope this article has given you a new perspective on the scale which can help you take a new approach in your weight loss journey.

What Is a Calorie?

When considering how many calories needed each day to lose weight, you hear the term calorie bandied about, but most people have a really nebulous idea of what a calorie actually is.

A calorie is a unit of food energy. Six nutrients contain calories. Carbohydrates and proteins have four calories per gram. Fats are more energetically dense, and have nine calories per gram. Alcohol has seven calories per gram. Other sources of calories include organic acids (such as acetic acid and lactic acid) and polyols (sugar alcohols such as Mannitol, Xylitol and Glycerol).

Calories and Weight Loss

One of the basic tenants of weight loss is that you need to burn more calories than you eat in order to lose weight. While this is true, the process is a little more complex than that simple statement indicates.

Calories – energy units – are burned by your body as energy. There is, however, a limit to the amount of calories your body utilizes as energy. This amount varies from person to person based upon a number of factors including your basic metabolic burn rate, the amount of lean body mass you have, and your activity level. Other chemical and hormonal factors may also affect how many calories your body burns each day, but they are beyond the scope of this article and are best discussed with a nutritionist or physician.

Any calorie consumed that your body does not convert to energy is stored as body fat.

Basal Metabolic Rate

Your basal metabolic rate is your minimal caloric burn rate. These are the calories you need just to exist and support bodily functions such as respiration, heart beat and digestion to name a few. This is an important number to consider when determing how many calories needed each day to lose weight. It is never advisable to have a daily caloric intake that falls below this basal metabolic rate (BMR). There are a number of methods that can be used to calculate BMR ranging from the very scientific which is done in a doctor’s office to an estimation that will work well for most people who are trying to get a handle on how much to eat. To get a general idea of your BMR, use this BMR calculator. This is the lowest amount of calories you should EVER eat unless directed otherwise by a physician.

Lean Body Mass

In general, the more lean body mass you have, the more calories your body will burn. Lean body mass is everything in your body that is not fat including muscles, bones, water and organs. Your lean body mass to body fat ratio is also referred to your body composition. There are a number of ways to measure body composition, including skin fold calipers and hydrostatic weighing. Most body composition calculations need to be done by an expert who has been trained in body composition. Skin caliper measurements are usually the least expensive method.

Activity Level

The more active you are, the more calories you will burn. Activity level includes more than formal exercise. It also includes how sedentary or active your job is, and whether you fidget a lot or sit still. There is a good basic equation that takes your activity level into account and recommends caloric intake based upon how active you are. This equation is called the Harris-Benedict equation. You can use a Harris-Benedict calculator to calculate your daily caloric needs.

How to Figure how many weight watchers points you can have in a day.

Would you like to know how many weight watchers points you are aloud to have in a day in order to start losing weight. This is a guide that will show you how to add up your daily points to accomplish your weight loss goals. Here’s how.

ADD POINTS: You will add all of these point up to figure out how many weight watchers points you can have in a day.

ARE YOU? Depending on if you are male of female, this is how many points you can add.
Male – 8 pts
Female – 2 pts

HOW OLD ARE YOU? Depending on which age bracket you are in, this is how many points you can add.
17-26 – 4 pts
27-37 – 3 pts
38-47 – 2 pts
48-58 – 1 pt
over 58 – 0 pts

WHAT DO YOU WEIGH? Use the first 2 digits of your weight – for example – if you weigh 145 then you can add 14 pts.

HOW ACTIVE ARE YOU? Depending on how active you are on a routine day, this is how many points you can add.

Since fad diets, unbalanced diets, diet pills, diet supplements, weight loss surgery and other short term weight loss methods are the cheaters way to lose weight, why bother? Cheaters never prosper and there is no substitute for proper nutrition. Take advantage of the many benefits soy can give to you and you will soon find yourself living the kind of life you deserve.

Online health and safety training

For Health and Safety Professionals registered with IOSH it’s now a requirement as aprt of the chartered status that CPD is constantly maintaiined and documented. Online health and safety training is very useful.

There are a whole host of courses out there with little or no merit and those that are extremely useful (not just health and safety courses).

Health and Safety Consultants have jumped on the CPD bandwagon and offer anything from one day CDM courses to 2 day DSE? I put the question mark there because I’m not sure that DSE merits anywhere near 2 days of our time. Health and Safety Professionals associate CPD with attendance at costly courses. However CPD is a mixture of both courses, reading maetrial and everyday experiences that give you the base knowledge. online health and safety training.

We do things in our everyday lives that contribute towards CPD, attendance at presentations, giving presentations, reading industry literature. the problem is we dont note these things down enough and its always a last minute panic to ensure that we get the required points in on time. Construction health and safety is an interesting one. I’ve learnt so much from just being on site and attending design team meetings.

As a CDM Coordinator it’s imperative that we note down what we’ve learnt so that we can take it onto the next project. Having been in the industry 10 years there’s been an awful lot of note taking. CDM is about experiences coupled with theoretical knowledge but you can never really gain from a book what you can in a meeting or discussion on site.

As chartered professionals we should be maintaining this level of attention to CPD to really demonstrate our skills but sadly this is done enough.

I’ve just put a powerpoint presentation together on the merits of the CDM regs for an Architectural practice this was certainly worth a few CD points anyway.
