Actor Morgan Freeman Urges Men to Take Better Care of Their Health

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 14, 2004

Actor Morgan Freeman is using his voice to urge men across the country to get regular check-ups and health screenings. Freeman has recorded five radio public service announcements for the Men’s Health Initiative, a program of the National Center for Primary Care at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.

Freeman is originally from the Mississippi Delta. It is there, in Clarksdale, Mississippi that one of the six Men’s Health Initiative learning laboratories is working to help underserved, uninsured and underinsured men, particularly those of color, receive quality health care throughout an impoverished four county area. Statistically, men of color are overall less likely to have health insurance, less likely to have access to health care and are more likely to receive inadequate care compared to White men. They are also more likely to die of illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. These men are not just numbers or statistics; each is someoneÂ?s father, brother or son. Each is a victim of a health care crisis that has begun to strong-arm minority men and men of color.

The Initiative began in the summer of 2001 through funding by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. It works to inform changes in policy at the local level by raising awareness and painting a picture of the plight of poor men and men of color. It also seeks to empower those living in those communities by urging them to become active participants in helping design healthcare systems that will suit their needs.

In 2000 the city of Baltimore opened the countryÂ?s first Men’s Health Center, providing full-service primary care to uninsured males between the ages of 19 and 64. The Baltimore and Clarksdale learning laboratories are joined by labs in Denver, Boston, Miami and Atlanta.

In 2003 actor Danny Glover participated in the launch of our first national media campaign. He did a series of public service announcements for both radio and television to raise awareness of both the crisis in men’s health and in the work being done at our national learning laboratories.

Each learning laboratory in the Men’s Health Initiative is working to close the gap in health disparities among poor men, often the working poor by providing a means for those who are ineligible for insurance or other comprehensive health coverage under current private, local and federal systems with programs through which they receive quality, affordable or free healthcare, including oral and mental healthcare.

Since the Initiative’s inception, numerous men’s health policy briefs and articles have been prepared to foster learning and to make recommendations for change. The Men’s Health Initiative is supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Various health related problems in human beings affect differently to men and women. It has been seen that women generally neglect their own health taking care of their husbands and kids. Some of the health concerns are solely feminine and some are more common in women than men. The ones more common in women are obesity, osteoarthritis, depression etc. and the ones unique to women are menopause, pregnancy, menstrual disorders etc.

- Always plan your pregnancies. See your doctor regularly when you are pregnant. Pre-natal care i.e. before planning a pregnancy has proved that it increases the chances of delivering a healthy baby and decreases all the pregnancy related complications. 
- Go for regular mammograms.

- Do not leave unchecked if you are facing any of the health problems as continuous backaches, change in color of urine and stool, lumps on body, persistent cough, pains and headaches, chest pains, change in colors of warts and moles etc. Get yourself checked up by a doctor if you face any of these. 
- Sudden gain or loss in weight should also not go ignored as it may be a symptom of some serious health problem. Obesity also increases the chances of heart diseases, diabetes, sleep apnea, cancers and osteoarthritis which you should be aware of.

Health care is very essential for women as it would affect the entire spectrum of their lives. Regular checkups are very necessary as some heath problems as cardiac disease, heart attacks etc. may go unnoticed as their symptoms in most of the women are not clear. They should opt for all the possible health care steps for early detections of various health diseases and to prevent or treat them fully. A few simple and known steps are acquiring healthy eating habits having balanced diet, low in saturated fats; exercising and regular medical checkups.

The common health problems faced by women if they smoke are chances to develop lung cancer that was thought more likely in men. Women should totally avoid cigarette and caffeine to remain healthy saving themselves from harmful results. It has been researched that caffeine present in coffee, tea, chocolates etc. may also increase the risk of benign breast diseases or cancers which most of the women are prone to. And it has been seen that the women suffering from non-cancerous breast diseases are relieved from their suffering after removing caffeine from their diet.

Women should be well aware of various risk factors to avoid any health problems. Although there are a few genetic ones which can’t be avoided at all but many others are in your control. Consult your doctor on various issues to reduce risk factors. Ask that how frequent you should make him visits and what all are the screenings, vaccines and tests which you may need. This way you can take good care of your health and can fully be incharge of your health issues.

Specialist Makes Plea for Men’s Health Awareness

Professor Robert McLachlan, Consultant Andrologist at Monash IVF and Director of Andrology Australia, addressed hundreds of medical professionals attending the annual Fertility Society of Australia Conference in Brisbane encouraging a greater recognition of men’s health matters in the setting of infertility.

“Male reproductive dysfunction is the sole or contributory cause of infertility in half of the couples presenting for treatment at IVF centres”, said Professor McLachlan. He went on to say “while we have made terrific technological advancements such as ICSI that allow a normal pregnancy from many men with severe infertility, we always have a responsibility to fully evaluate men for conditions that can be treated to restore their ability to father children naturally. We must also look for conditions that are known to be more common in this group of men, and also address matters of lifestyle that could impact on fertility and their health more generally.”

These important points were also made recently by Professor McLachlan when addressing General Practitioners at a series of education lectures held by Monash IVF at several sites nationally. The aim of these educational events was to raise awareness of how to make early detection of the signs and symptoms of male and female infertility. Early intervention by lifestyle changes and/or medical treatment could then be more effective at either restoring natural fertility or improving the outcomes of medical treatments for infertility, such as IVF.

When men consult a GP or Fertility Specialist with their female partner in an effort to achieve a pregnancy it is an opportune time for lifestyle issues to be addressed whilst they are relatively young and healthy. The co-morbidities associated with poor lifestyle and infertility include testicular cancer, cardio vascular disease and androgen deficiency but, for many, the symptoms of these will not be realised until a further 20+ years down the track. For many men, their attendance with a fertility problem may be the first time they have seen a doctor for quite a while and taking the opportunity to address their holistic health care should not be missed.

Another important observation is that 70% of men with Klinefelter’s Syndrome (chromosomes XXY) escape diagnosis for their entire lifetime! This is alarming considering that a simple testicular examination would alert a Medical Practitioner to this given that testicular volume in Klinefelter’s men is around 4ml compared to the normal 30ml. Many do not have the “textbook” appearance (tall, feminised) but their health and well-being would greatly benefit from testosterone supplementation once diagnosed.
